This cheeky little guy I discovered by canoe out near the marsh. There was
an area near the shore where he would
swim, entranced by a female mallard and would willingly come to receive corn.
Many have said I must have a really
long lens to get this shot but in truth I had to keep backing up in order to
get him in my lens as he came so close and
was not shy at all, very unusual for a wood duck. The male Wood Duck is the
most beautiful of North American
ducks. His eyes are encircled in red, his crested head a dark iridescent
green and purple with a white strip across his
head and neck. White speckles adorn his burgundy chest. The latin name for
this duck is interpreted as 'Water bird
in Bridal Dress'.
